Take a closer look. At first glance, it looks like ITIL is only for the very large organization. But take heart. ITIL can be implemented in any size organization.

However, the advice that follows tkes a turn down a completely different path. While IT Service Management (vs ITIL) can definitely be implemented in any size organization, it is very important to remember that the focus should always be on the delivery, management and support of IT Services.
While the ITIL concepts can be applied to practically any scenario (i.e. organizing a sock drawer,) we must be careful to remember the purpose for each process. Point: Not every asset database can be a CMDB. A Configuration Management Database is a specific repository for IT service related information, not asset tracking as suggested by Ms. Liebert.
As such, it should only include those service components (CIs) that are necessary for the delivery of that service.
A good rule of thumb useful when considering whether the implementation of these best practice concepts makes sense for your organization is to ask yourself the following questions:
- Where do you want to go? -- What are the objectives of the organization?
- Where are you now? -- How close or far are you to achieving these objectives?
- How do you get there? -- What best practices, processes, frameworks, methodologies can help you to get there?
- How do you know when you've arrived -- What measurements are important for tracking your progress?
Starting with these 4 basic questions can help any size organization to start off on the right path to realizing it's objectives.
